7:44 1979 album Bustin' Loose Washington, DC, guitarist/bandleader Chuck Brown started the Soul Searchers around 1968 with drummer Frank Wellman and bassist John Ewell. Bill Withers suggested Brown to Sussex Records head Clarence Avant. Their Sussex singles include "We the People," number 40 R&B, summer 1972, and "Blow Your Whistle," number 31 R&B, summer 1974. In 1976 Brown got a song idea that was built around a syncopated groove. The idea evolved into "Bustin' Loose." The band, which expanded to include a horn section, performed the song for two years to enthusiastic audiences as they performed extensively on the East Coast. Producer/musician James Purdie convinced Brown to put "Bustin' Loose" down on wax. Skeptical because he saw no income from records, Brown finally relented. The recording session was done at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studios. The lineup was bassist Jerry Wilder, organist Curtis Johnson, synth player John Buchanan, conga player Gregory Gerran, saxophonist Leroy Fleming, and trumpeter Donald Tillery. Frank Wellman's son Ricky Wellman played drums, giving Brown the exact beat that he'd tried so hard to get from other drummers. Issued on the Source label, the million-selling "Bustin' Loose, Pt. 1" parked at number one R&B for four weeks and number 34 pop. In early 1979 the Bustin' Loose LP went gold, peaking at number five R&B and number 31 pop.
