giusto un anno fa, quando l’onda dell’house iniziava ad rialzarsi, avrei comprato a scatola chiusa qualsiasi disco con su scritto freak n’chic. in dodici mesi, fatta eccezione per pochi lavori tra cui l’album di anthony collins dal titolo “doubts & shouts” e l’ep “I care” firmato da dyed soundorom, sono cambiate diverse cose, almeno per quanto riguarda il mio personalissimo gusto. la label di dan ghenacia, però, ha tirato fuori dal cilindo una release davvero grandiosa, senza dubbio tra le migliori del suo catalogo, grazie al talento del duo londinese anthea & celler, già protagonisti di uno degli ultimi cecille numbers. stiamo parlando di “the playmaker ep”, che grazie alla versione del parigino dyed soundorom ha saputo letteralmente rapirmi. il campione vocale ipnotico, unito al basso di soundorom (ormai un marchio di fabbrica), dona al disco quel groove capace di tenere la pista in perenne sollecitazione…ep strepitoso!

The DJ. T tour train rumbles on this week, with stops at 10 Days Off Festival in Ghent, where he bumps into his DJ pals Tiefschwarz and Audiofly, Heile Welt Open Air, where the weather didn’t quite ruin the party, and Cologne, for the long-running Pollerwiesen rave.

After three successful weeks on the road, DJ T. also felt it was time to build a DJ chart featuring 10 classics for the moment.

Elite Force unites the sometimes warring factions of electro house, techno, and breakbeat, like a peace keeper who values the spirit of cooperation and tolerance.

He was forged in the fires of breakbeat, which has always had a habit of sucking in sounds that pass by. Elite’s sets are like a team performance, with tracks coming from all corners of the bass-driven sector, to create a vibrant hodgepodge of boundary-pushing dance music.

His U&A Recordings is a bastion for genre-defying club music from open-minded artists like Zodiac Cartel, Dustbowl, and Meat Katie, all of whom sit comfortably in the grey territory between four-to-the-floor grooves and broken beat.

With genres meaning less and less these days, we decided to find which weapons Elite Force has lurking in his accommodating record box.

la parola inglese groove indica una serie ritmica che si ripete ciclicamente, generalmente ogni battuta. è un termine popolare, in uso già dagli anni ‘60. la sua traduzione letterale è solco e in ambito musicale indica il solco dei dischi in vinile; esiste tuttavia anche il verbo inglese to groove che fra i suoi significati ha anche quello di divertirsi intensamente. si può considerare l’equivalente di quello che in campo melodico è definito riff.
il termine “groove” è molto usato nella black music e suoi derivati e lo si usa anche per definire un certo portamento del ritmo tipico di taluni generi come per esempio funk, r’n'b. si differenzia da quello che nel jazz è definito “swing” soprattutto per un’indicazione più marcata di ripetitività. caratteristica comune a entrambi i concetti è la possibilità di inserire minime variazioni all’interno della una sequenza ritmica. gli earth, wind & fire hanno usato l’espressione come verbo nel celebre “let’s groove”, con il significato di divertirsi (ballando).
è entrato nel gergo comune il modo di dire “ha un bel groove”, intendendo una musica o un musicista in grado di creare una potente empatia con l’ascoltatore tramite il solo linguaggio ritmico. un’ espressione gergale assimilabile in uso negli ambienti musicali può essere “ha un bel tiro”.
il termine è stato utilizzato successivamente dalla cantante madonna nel testo del suo singolo di successo “into the groove”, parte della colonna sonora del film cercasi susan disperatamente, giocando sull’ambiguità di significato della parola intesa come “solco” e “impulso ritmico”.
con l’avvento dei computer e soprattutto con l’uso creativo di loop il groove è divenuto criterio fondamentale necessario al successo di quasi tutti i generi musicali che si avvalgono pesantemente dell’elettronica, in particolare la dance e l’hip-hop.

Like caped crusaders, they have a mission, and they hide behind masks. No one knows who they really are. Over the past 18 months, anonymous artists have released a stream of undiluted techno music on labels that are unknown.

The music usually comes with no sleeve notes, recognisable names, or logos. The artists are completely off the grid but their message is clear – let the music speak for itself.

“Anonymous techno is created to put space between the artist and the listener,” explains Function, aka Dave Sumner, a producer who is part of the Sandwell District collective, the only label in this small and mysterious purist techno niche that barely touches the outside world.
